The majestic East African lake, Nalubaale, is the source of the world's longest river.

My folk song is a celebration of the majestic lake, Nalubaale, in East Africa which is the mother of the mighty river Nile.

In Luganda, which is my Ugandan - East African heritage language, Nnyanja means 'lake'; hence the song title: 'Lake Nalubaale, Nnyanja Nalubaale'.

Lyrics

You may have heard of Lake Victoria
A lake so large
It’s like an inland sea.

Well this great lake is in East Africa
And despite what the school books say
It’s not called Victoria
In Luganda it’s called Nalubaale.

Lake Nalubaale
Nnyanja Nalubaale
Cos despite what the school books say
She’s called Nalubaale

Lake Nalubaale
Nnyanja Nalubaale
Cos despite what the school books say
She’s called Nalubaale

The world’s longest river
The mighty Kiira
Which you may know as the mighty river Nile
Starts at lake Nalubaale
And travels north four thousand miles
From Uganda to South Sudan
To Ethiopia
Sudan, Egypt to the Mediterranean sea.

So enjoy the iconic African architecture
In each country along the way
On the journey that begins
At lake Nalubaale.

Lake Nalubaale
Nnyanja Nalubaale
Cos despite what the school books say
She’s called Nalubaale

Lake Nalubaale
Nnyanja Nalubaale
Cos despite what the school books say
She’s called Nalubaale

The spelling is N-a-l-u-b-a-a-l-e
Nalubaale
Once again N-a-l-u-b-a-a-l-e
Nalubaale

Yes
She’s the second largest freshwater lake
In the world
And she’s the mother of the mighty river Nile
Lake Nalubaale
Nnyanja Nalubaale
